The Barak Valley was brought under Koch rule in 1562 when the legendary Koch commander Chilarai defeated the Twipra (Tripura) kingdom and established a garrison at Brahmapur, which later came to be called Kochpur and then Khaspur.
Chargola lay on the northern frontier of Sribhumi (Karimganj), bordering the hills inhabited by Kuki chiefs. Dense forests, marshes, and water bodies made it a natural fortress. Control of Chargola meant control over movement between the plains of Barak Valley and the hill tracts beyond
